Lynchburg, VA – The recent tornadoes have left a number of families homeless, and now many are turning to their insurance agencies to help them put their lives back together. Hundreds of tornado insurance claims are piling up in Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Virginia. North Carolina and Virginia.
Insurance agents say everyone should know what their policy covers, and make sure their records are in order as well.
Bradley McDaniel is from Alabama and is all too familiar with the destruction of tornadoes. He feels for the hundreds of people now trying to rebuild their lives.
"It's very heartbreaking that people have lost everything they worked their whole lives to maintain," said McDaniel.
There's little anyone can do to fully save a house from a tornado, but McDaniel says having insurance does give him some comfort.
"It helps to know I have a way to start putting my life back together," said McDaniel.
Insurance Agent Carl DeWitt says most homeowners and renter's insurance cover tornadoes under wind storm damage. The insurance will cover your home, and relocation fees.
"This allows the family to be relocated to a hotel, or a replacement home," said DeWitt.
But, DeWitt says there is a part a lot of people skip when filling out their insurance, documenting personal belongings.
"A lot of people don't keep good records of their items, and they often forget what they had," said DeWitt.
DeWitt says insurance companies need proof of ownership to pay for belongings, and if it's not listed.
So put your camera to use and take pictures of all of your belongings in your home, it will take some extra time, but insurance agents say it will save you in the end.
"If it's not listed on the claim it's not going to be paid for," DeWitt said.
You can also show proof of ownership with receipts or manuals or you can document your belongings in an online database for free at websites like knowyourstuff.org.
